Ransomware is malicious software designed to prevent an individual or organization from gaining access to its data by encrypting its files and then demanding a fee (usually in Bitcoins) to decrypt the data and if you haven’t heard of it…. it’s one of the new boogeyman of the IT world.

In the beginning ransomware only targeted residential users; it is however now spreading quickly into the corporate world. It’s an ever increasing, ever evolving threat—and whether you believe it or not, it could happen to you.

IT security software experts such as Kaspersky, Symantec, and FSecure are all raising the alarm that ransomware attacks are evolving, spinning off new deadly versions of themselves and raising the bar as hackers set their sights on larger targets like universities and hospitals.

Okay.. now that I know what ransomware is and does, what do I do to protect myself?

  • Keep all software up to date, including operating systems and applications: I can't stress how important it is to keep your system updated with the latest security patches.

  • Back up all information to an external device ( storing a backup of your PC on your PC defeats the purpose)

  • Don’t surf the web on your administrator account. Create a non admin account for web browsing.

  • Encrypt your data – We can show you how to beat the hackers at their own game.

  • Train family on cyber-security practices, emphasizing that they should not open attachments or links from unknown sources.

  • Be aware of what digital device has access to your network. Don't let your children or spouse give access to your network without your knowledge and approval.

If you commit yourself and your family to each one of these measures, you can be sure that you are providing the best possible protection for your data.

If you have questions or need help securing your data contact us at support@firewire5.com or call 1-877-470-8372 and leave your name and a call back number and we will be more than happy to assist you.

Don't wait until your system has been compromised to take action. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
